Course Introduction

Radio Controlled Aircraft

RC Aircraft Design, Fabrication and Flying is an aeromodelling program that helps participants learn about the dynamics and design of an airplane. This program on aeromodelling would introduce the participants to the four pillars of Aerospace Engineering - Aerodynamics, Flight Mechanics, Aircraft Propulsion and Structures, with stress on the first two topics. In this program, basics of electronics relevant to RC aeromodelling (radio controls, servo motors, brushless DC Motors, Electronic Speed Controllers, etc.) would also be covered.

Quadcopter

Quadcopter, also called a Quadrotor helicopter, is a rotary-wing aircraft with four rotors. It finds applications in both civil and military domains. Its amazing maneuverability and the ease of flight in constricted locations have achieved itself a remarkable position in the aviation sector. Our program helps participants understand the concepts and use of accelerometer sensor, microcontrollers and wireless communication in designing and controlling a Quadcopter.

    • Introduction to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    • Hands-on experience with in-flight electronics - Transmitter, Receiver, Servos, Brushless Motors, Electronic Controller, etc
  • Quadcopter

    • Introduction to rotary-wing and multi rotor aircraft concepts
    • Understanding the Electronics circuitry involved in Quadcopter
    • Learning about the working of accelerometer sensors, gyroscopes and controllers
    • Hands-on experience for participants with DC motors, electronic speed controllers and Quadcopter Embedded control board

  • Introductory Lecture on Aeromodelling
    • Basics of Flight Dynamics & Aeronautics
    • Different Systems in an Aircraft
    • Stability & Control of an Aircraft
    • Instrumentation in an RC Aircraft
  • Interactive Design Session
  • Fabrication Session
  • Testing Session - all aircrafts designed by the participants are flown by an expert flyer of Team Roboversity

Quadcopter

  • Understanding rotary-wing aircraft and their Dynamics
  • Exposure to Design and concepts of Embedded Systems behind Multicopters
  • Fabrication of Quadcopter frame and its circuit
  • Calibration and Testing of the developed Quadcopter
  • Quadcopter Flying using Radio Control and competition

    All the above components would be provided during the program to participants in groups of 5 but would be taken back at the end. This is being done to reduce the cost of the program and make it affordable for students who do not want to buy the take-home kit.

    Take-home kit consists of all the above items excluding transmitter and receiver.

    #Working tools will be taken back after the program

    The common electronic components in the kits for RC Aircraft will be reused from the Quadcopter.
